How long have you worked at Faction Servers and what is your job role?

I’ve started the role as Data Centre Technician a month ago after completing my degree at Coventry University studying Ethical Hacking and Cybersecurity.

What do you like most about working within a data centre environment?

The vast range of resources, systems and hardware that I get to work on a daily basis has allowed me to enhance my understanding in many different areas.  There is huge diversity in the jobs that I carry out and it is rewarding when you are able complete a task to the customers satisfaction that subsequently enhances their business operations.

What does a typical day at Fraction Servers look like?

No two days are alike, we operate a 24/7/365 support service, with many of our customers use their servers for different services and applications.  The team here at Fraction Servers have many years of experience in different IT systems and I am learning from their skill sets, and problem solving abilities ensuring we can resolve customer issues as quickly as possible.

What do you think makes Fraction Servers unique?

The customers are at the forefront of whatever we do, throughout the lifecycle of their service with us, from setting up the servers to monitoring the systems . If there is an issue, we are at hands to ensure a fast response and fix whatever time of the day/night this occurs.

Is there a particular tool, script or piece of software that you find invaluable in your day to day job?

There are a lot of tools that are being used, would not say that there is one that is mostly used other than another one. As a data centre technician using multiple tools can allow you to see different views and outputs on which others may not be able to, This allows you to see the bigger picture than just using the onse tool. This is why using different tools can allow you to troubleshoot any problem that could be missed by another.

What was your first IT job and how did you get into the role? 

This is my first role working within the IT environment, and happy to join the great team at Fraction Servers. I’ve just recently completed a degree at Coventry University studying Bsc Ethical Hacking and Cybersecurity. My studies at Coventry allowed me to explore the different types of fields in Cybersecurity ranging from Offensive, Defensive and forensic investigation. This allowed the development of Cyber Security Methodologies and Technical skills in utilizing tools/applications. Also networking and systems allow me to study for my CCNA, CompTIA Security +. My degree allowed me to obtain knowledge about The OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities, Ransomware and Malware analysis and other offensive applications and vulnerabilities assessments, and how to find these in the wild. After the initial assessments were tasked to provide on how to mitigate against these vulnerabilities, attacks and offering a defensive strategy to defend against in the future. This also gave an understanding of Intrusion detection systems (Snort and Suricata) SIEM technology, mostly Splunk and  ElasticSearch/ELK stack, Vulnerability assessment (Nessus and OpenVAS), and Infrastructure security. The degree gave an understanding of  International and National legislation such as GDPR, standards such as NIST, MITRE ATT&CK framework etc. This is to ensure an understanding of compliance with these regulations, framework and standards the region is investigating and also to be enforced. The role with Fraction servers allows me to incorporate these skills that I’ve learnt from my studies, personal knowledge and own projects. As we have a high standards of securing customers systems, and providing support for the customers.

I am a fan of a hypervisor! I love to virtualise where possible though run Ubuntu on my home machine.
